APPLYING YOUR DEGREE IN THE REAL WORLD

Sponsoring Organization:
Temple University Kornberg School of Dentistry – Alumni Relations

Details of the Activity:
On September 29th at 12 PM in Timmons Hall, Temple Dental alumnus Will Choi (Class of 2009) presented “Applying Your Degree in the Real World.” The event explored diverse career paths available to dental graduates, including private practice, academia, startups, and more. Lunch was provided to attendees who RSVP’d.

What I Learned:
I gained valuable insight into how a dental degree can be leveraged across different career trajectories. Dr. Choi shared his personal journey, highlighting the opportunities and challenges in building a practice, pursuing academic teaching, and even engaging in entrepreneurial ventures. I learned that flexibility and adaptability are essential in shaping a fulfilling dental career, and that success can come in many forms beyond traditional clinical practice.

Relation to Coursework and Career Goals:
This event directly connects to my professional development as a dental student preparing for an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) career. The talk reinforced the importance of thinking strategically about my long-term goals—whether in academia, private practice, or hospital-based practice—and how I can apply both clinical and leadership skills acquired during dental school. It also emphasized the role of networking with alumni, which is critical for externships, residencies, and mentorship as I prepare for my career in OMFS.
