Mary Jones is for transfer students; freshman should look at Josie Smith.
Junior
Mary Jones just completed two years at another institution and is now transferring to ABC University as a Junior. She just declared a major, and now wants to start working on the PRO points program as soon as fall semester starts.
In the fall, Mary gets started by creating her portfolio. Since Mary is already a Junior, she wants to get started quickly because she has looked at the department’s PRO Community site and understands that the portfolio is very important to her success. Mary uses the tips and tools on the site to start a portfolio and get 50 points. The Dashboard, which is private and unique to Mary, also allows her to compare her progress with other students and track her professional development progress toward graduation.
Mary is not satisfied with just having 50 points, so she also signs up for a career fair in the fall. She really wants an internship for this coming summer and has heard that it is important to get started early to have the most opportunities. Participating in the career fair means another 50 points.
Meanwhile, Mary has also signed up to be part of a student organization and they hold weekly meetings and workshops where students can earn points. Mary ends up attending five professional development workshops during the fall and earns 50 points. She soon becomes an active member in the student organization, which means she has a portfolio, attended at least 7 speaker series meetings, 1 social event and 2 community service events. She gets another 50 points for these activities.
The Spring semester rolls around, and Mary decides to take a look at the calendar, which is available on the PRO site and is open for all students to see. She sees an interesting event that is happening in a few days on campus about starting a business, so she signs up. Since it is preapproved and, on the calendar, she does not need to do anything prior to her participating in the event except register. After the event, Mary logs in to her PRO Dashboard and clicks on Manage points to request PRO points and provides supporting documentation (nametag from the event). In a few days, Mary checks the PRO Dashboard and sees that she has earned 25 points for attending a professional development event at an external organization.
Spring semester also brings about a big event for students, the annual Awards Reception. Since Mary knows how important it is to get to know others, she signs up for the event and signs up for a volunteer slot. After the reception, she receives another 25 points for attending and 25 points for volunteering. Mary also attended five more student organization workshops this semester and was an active member, earning her 100 more points. That brings her up to 475 points for the Junior year!
Mary was able to secure an internship at Meta (Facebook) during the summer. Upon completion of the summer internship, Mary requests PRO points and attaches the offer letter. In a few days she receives congratulations! and 400 points. Also, during the summer, Mary competes in a challenge off campus. Since she got it preapproved before competing, she is able to request 50 points. Even though she did win, it was a great experience!
Senior
Senior year rolls around and Mary is even more involved in the student organization. She is an active member, both in the spring and the fall semesters (100 points), she is also a student organization officer (75 points) and participated in five workshops in the spring (50 points). She also attends a career fair (50 points) and the annual Awards Reception (25 points) again this year. Mary was a volunteer at the career fair this year and received 25 points for assisting with a department event.
Mary and a team of other students entered into a University Challenge in the fall and received 50 points for participating. She makes it to the finals and wins first prize!! This earns her another 100 points. Mary also attended a professional development event off campus to earn 25 points. During the semester, Mary was invited to meet with an Executive in Residence during the spring semester and received 25 points for that experience. She is now up to 1450 points at the end of her Senior year.
Mary wants to have some swag, so she visits the PRO Store to redeem some of her Reward points. She knows that redeeming Reward points will not affect her PRO points at all. She decides to get a water bottle and a lapel pin to wear at the events in the fall.
At the beginning of the spring term of her senior year, Mary is feeling good about her level of professional development, but she wants that Grand Master Badge, so she stays engaged. She is very proud of her level of engagement and professional development. At first, she was a little worried that coming in as a transfer student would hinder her in earning points, but it was really easy and fun!
She also attends a career fair (50 points) even though she has a full time offer from Google. You never know when you will want to change jobs, so Mary is all into exploring new opportunities. She reported the full-time job offer, receiving 100 points. She also attends the annual Awards Reception (25 points) again this year.
This brings Mary up to 1740 and she has her Grand Master badge on the portfolio now! Since it is time to graduate, Mary wants to redeem the rest of her Rewards points, so she visits the PRO Store and cashes the points in for some cool stuff!
